Rules

  • Once you've signed up you will receive a number. That number will correlate with the order, to which your story will be written. You will have one week to write your story once it is your turn in the queue.
  • The hotel is in downtown phoenix and it will go UNNAMED, so do not discuss the name of the hotel.
  • Your story must exist within this room (see pictures). You may not go into any other area of the hotel or be on the exterior of the hotel.
  • You may have dream sequences or flashes to different locations and/or periods of time within the story. However, 75% of the story must take place awake in the hotel room. (i.e. a dream while sleeping in the hotel room for the entire story DOES NOT count.)
  • You will be given an object from the previous story and this object must be a critical part of your plot. For instance: Let's say it is a pen. You can't have a character use the pen to sign for room service on the first page, and then just write your own story. You must include that pen as a crucial plot point.
  • You must leave an object behind. This can be done in several ways: Maybe it rolls under the bed; maybe its stuffed in a towel; or maybe your story ends with the guests leaving the room and it's simply sitting on the desk.
  • There is no censorship or genre restriction.
  • The word range is 500 to 5,000.
  • Once your story is written you must bring it to Wednesday Central Phoenix Writing Group for critique. You must alert either Cameron, Jake, Michael or Andrew that you have a "Hotel Piece," what number you were, what item was left behind and where in the room it was left.
  • Again, once it is your turn in the order (based on your number) you will be told the item and it's location. You must then bring your piece the following week.
  • If you do not bring anything the following week you will be skipped. You can speak with Cameron, Jake, Andrew or Michael about getting back in the queue, but no promises.
  • Once all of the stories are written and critiqued, they will be submitted for a final edit by the publishers before being published.
  • The publishers reserve the right to ask for a substantial re-write if deemed necessary. By signing up for this you are agreeing to comply with any and all re-write requests. Given the nature of this project, once you sign up and submit a story you cannot pull your piece after the fact. However, as the writer you will maintain full rights to the story if you'd like to publish it elsewhere
Writing starts January 30th. You will receive an email with your number and a corresponding due date. Remember: the due date is for reference only. Don’t start writing! The object left behind by the previous author has to be key to your plot.
